WordPress critical error: what to check before changing the site

A critical error means WordPress encountered a failure it could not recover from. The warning alone does not identify a faulty plugin or mean the site is lost. Stop making changes and record what happened first.
Start with three questions
- Does the error affect the whole site, one page or only the administration area?
- Did it begin after a plugin, theme, WordPress or hosting PHP update?
- Is there a backup from before the failure, including files and database?
Keep the affected address, approximate time and a screenshot. Changing several things at once makes it harder to identify what helped or made matters worse.
Check the administration email
WordPress may send details and a recovery-mode link. Check that the message is legitimate and the link belongs to your domain. Recovery access can help investigate the failing component; it does not promise a repair. Keep the link private.
If no message arrived, check spam and ask the host whether its PHP logs contain a fatal error at that time. Request the relevant entry with credentials and personal details removed. Do not display debugging errors publicly on a customer-facing website.
Isolate the cause on a test copy
With access and a recoverable backup, a technician can reproduce the fault and test the suspected plugin or theme separately. Disabling every plugin on a live website can also switch off payments, forms or bookings. Stores require additional care around orders received after a backup was taken.
Illustrative example: the error began immediately after a page-builder update. Checking its version and compatibility is a better first investigation than changing hosts or reinstalling the entire site.
Check the result beyond the homepage
Test administration access, the contact form, important pages and, for a store, a purchase in test mode. Document the change and keep a rollback route.
See the official WordPress error documentation and our safe updates guide. If you cannot estimate the hours, select that option in the support request. A critical error has no universal repair time.
