WordPress website down or error 500: where to start

2026-10-01 · 3 min read

Distinguish a website fault from hosting or domain trouble and collect useful evidence before changing configuration.

In this article

A 500 error is a generic server response. It does not establish that you need more memory, another plugin or a new host. A website that never responds at all may have a different issue involving DNS, its certificate or server availability.

Identify the boundaries

Try the homepage and an inner page, then another connection and browser. Record the exact message: a certificate warning, a 404 page and a 500 response need different investigations.

If the hosting panel is also unavailable, check the provider’s status and contact support. Verify domain and hosting renewals inside the relevant accounts rather than trusting unexpected messages requesting urgent payment.

Give hosting support something concrete

Send the affected address, time and timezone, error code, whether every page is affected and the last known change. Ask the provider to check server status and logs for that period.

A failure limited to a form submission or checkout gives a useful starting point. Include reproduction steps using test data. Do not repeat real payments to investigate the cause.

Avoid trial-and-error repairs

Do not replace configuration files or keep increasing limits without reviewing logs. On Apache hosting, invalid configuration can contribute to a 500 error; other servers use different files and rules. Copying a fix from a different environment can introduce new problems.

If a recent change preceded the failure, identify its earlier version and a safe rollback route. Restoring a backup can remove orders or edits received since that backup. Agree what must be preserved first.

Define the intervention’s objective

The first objective may be restoring a contact page or temporarily disabling an affected feature. That differs from resolving the underlying cause. Ask for a record that separates containment, the actual fix and the checks performed.

The official common errors guide lists possible causes. When contacting Feitura, indicate whether the issue is affecting the business now. We confirm availability and scope; selecting urgency does not guarantee an immediate response.
