WordPress form not sending email: find where it fails
2026-10-01 · 3 min read
A success message does not prove an email arrived. Separate submission, sending and delivery to investigate missing enquiries.
In this article
A customer fills in the form, sees “message sent” and nothing arrives. Three different steps are involved: accepting the submission, attempting to send the email and delivering it to the recipient. Diagnosis starts by finding which step failed.
Make a traceable test
Use fictional details and a recognisable subject, such as “Contact test — 14:30”. Note the time and configured recipient. Check inbox, spam and mail filters. If the form plugin stores submissions, look for the test there; not all plugins retain entries.
| What you observe | What to investigate next |
|---|---|
| The button does nothing or reports an error | Validation, JavaScript and the form response |
| A submission exists but no email was attempted | Plugin notification settings and mail service configuration |
| Sending was accepted but nothing arrived | Rejections, spam and delivery logs at the mail provider |
| Only certain recipients are affected | Their domains and the receiving server responses |
Check both recipient and sender
The receiving address may contain a typo or no longer exist. The sending address must be authorised by the mail service. Using the visitor’s address as the sender can cause authentication problems. Usually it belongs in Reply-To, while the website sends from its own authenticated domain.
An authenticated email integration can help, but installing an SMTP plugin without configuring the service does not establish delivery. Review SPF, DKIM and other domain settings with the provider. Do not remove existing DNS records by trial and error.
Test the automatic reply too
The internal notification and the visitor’s confirmation may have separate settings. Test both. If you retain message contents for diagnosis, restrict access and retention because those entries may contain personal information.
The official wp_mail reference explains that a successful send result does not confirm receipt. After the fix, submit the whole form and verify arrival at both ends.
For support, share the form plugin, when delivery stopped and the checks already performed. Do not send email credentials. Mention any slow response or submission errors in the same request.
