WordPress images not showing: separate the possible causes

2026-10-01 · 3 min read

Old links, missing files, thumbnails or browser blocking: a sequence of checks for images that stopped appearing.

In this article

A blank image may be a missing file, an old address or a problem with how the page displays it. Before uploading the entire library again, determine whether one image, one size or every image is affected.

Compare the page with the original file

Open the image details in the media library and find its file address. If that address works but the page does not show the image, investigate the block, page builder, thumbnails and lazy loading. If the original also fails, investigate the file, access permissions or the domain serving it.

Observed pattern Hypothesis to check
Started after a domain move Old addresses remain in content
Only certain thumbnails fail Missing derived sizes or stale references
Only fails when logged out Cache, permissions or access protection
Browser blocks HTTP images on an HTTPS page Mixed content and insecure addresses

These are diagnostic hypotheses, not conclusions about an unexamined website.

Keep a representative example

Record the page address, expected image and observed result. If you know the browser’s developer tools, note the image response: 404 points to a missing resource; 403 indicates refused access. The precise cause still needs checking at the server or image service.

Fix the source before clearing caches

Clearing a cache may reveal an existing fix, but it cannot create a missing file. Regenerating thumbnails does not recover deleted originals. After a migration, replacing addresses requires a backup and tools that understand WordPress data formats.

Do not make every directory publicly writable to “fix” images. Avoid replacing original photography with small social-media downloads without checking quality and usage rights.

Check phones and desktop screens

A website can serve different image sizes to different screens. Test both, ensure proportions remain correct and provide alternative text describing relevant information where appropriate.

See the official Site Health documentation and our HTTPS guide. For support, attach a screenshot without personal details and one affected page. A clear example is usually more useful than dozens of images.
