How to Make Your Business Show Up in ChatGPT and AI Search

2026-08-29 · 5 min read

A quiet shift is changing how customers find you: instead of typing "hairdresser Amadora" into Google and opening three websites, a growing share simply asks — ChatGPT, Gemini, the AI answer at the top of Google itself — "what's a good hairdresser in Amadora and how much is a cut?". And gets a finished answer, with two or three businesses mentioned by name.

The obvious question: how does your business become one of the mentioned?

The honest answer has two parts. First: nobody — us included — can guarantee a spot in AI answers, and you should distrust anyone who promises otherwise. Second: the answers do not come from nowhere. They come from sources the AI reads, and you can influence those sources today, with concrete, verifiable work. The industry calls this AEO or GEO (answer/generative engine optimization); we prefer the old name: getting your house in order.

Where AI answers actually come from

The mechanics are worth understanding, because they kill several myths:

Answers about local businesses are, in practice, searches. When someone asks about "restaurants in Queluz", ChatGPT and friends do not recite memory — they search the live web and summarise what they find: search results, your website, directories, reviews, articles. Google's AI answers lean on Google's normal index and, for local businesses, drink heavily from the Google Business Profile and Maps.

The practical consequence is liberating: the work that gets you into AI answers is largely the same work that gets you into Google — done with more discipline. Anyone selling you "AI SEO" as a secret new discipline is reselling you the basics with a 2026 label.

The five factors you control

1. A Google Business Profile completed to the millimetre. For local questions it is source number one: right category, current hours, real photos, services and prices filled in. The AI answers with whatever is there — including the wrong opening hours, if that is what it finds. Our field-by-field guide remains the best one-afternoon investment a local business can make.

2. A website with quotable facts. AI models love pages that answer questions directly and in structure: clear prices, service lists, addresses, FAQs with short answers. A "Prices" page with real numbers is quotable; a brochure site that says "contact us to learn more" gives the AI nothing to say about you. If your site does not even show up on Google yet, start there — AI cannot cite what it cannot find.

3. Structured data (schema). Marking your site up with local-business structured data — name, address, hours, reviews, services, in the format machines read — states your facts to the AI without ambiguity. On a well-built site it is an hour of technical work, and it is one of the few items on this list most of your competition has not done.

4. Reviews — volume, recency, and replies. When an AI says "well reviewed by customers", it is summarising Google reviews and similar. Quantity, freshness and your replies all count — the right process for asking is here.

5. Being mentioned where the AI reads. Sector directories, local associations, regional press, articles answering questions in your field: every consistent mention of your name + town + service is another vote in the answer. Consistency matters — if your name and address vary from source to source, the AI treats you as two half-reliable businesses instead of one solid one.

Don't lock the door by accident

A technical detail with consequences: AI assistants visit websites with identified crawlers (OpenAI's GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, among others), and some sites block them in robots.txt without realising — often by blindly copying block lists. For a local business, blocking these bots is asking not to exist in the answers. One important nuance: Google's AI answers use Google's normal index, so you cannot opt out of them by blocking training bots — one more reason to skip that war and spend the energy on the five points above. Ask whoever runs your site what your robots.txt currently blocks; the answer may surprise you.

The snake oil, identified

Every new channel brings the same fauna. Red flags:

  • "We guarantee you'll appear in ChatGPT." Nobody controls anyone's model. Run.
  • "We register your business with the AI." There is no register. It is the 2026 edition of "we submit your site to 500 search engines".
  • "AI ranking" reports. Answers vary by question, day and user; a stable "ranking" is sellable fiction.

What genuinely exists is the work on the list above — which conveniently also improves your Google results, your local SEO and the experience of everyone who lands on your site. If it fails all of them at once, it fails nothing.

Where to start this week

  1. Run the test yourself: ask ChatGPT and Gemini "[your type of business] in [your town]" and see who shows up — and where the cited sources come from.
  2. Complete your Google Business Profile until no field is empty.
  3. Publish prices and FAQs on your site, in plain text.
  4. Confirm your robots.txt is not blocking AI crawlers.
  5. Ask every happy customer for a review — this week and every week.
